mà as 'that, which' (relative clauses)

VietnameseB2 — Upper IntermediateFormal and written style
PatternN + (mà) + S + V

How it works

Relative clauses follow the noun, and mà can link them: cuốn sách mà tôi mua hôm qua 'the book (that) I bought yesterday'. Mà is optional and mostly used when the clause has its own subject; for subject relatives just place the clause after the noun: người đứng kia 'the person standing there'. Formal writing may use mà or the more literary nơi (where), khi (when). Mistake: using là or cái mà everywhere; never put the relative clause before the noun.

Examples

Đây là quán mà tôi thích nhất.This is the restaurant (that) I like best.
Người mà anh gặp hôm qua là bác sĩ.The person (whom) you met yesterday is a doctor.
Cô gái mặc áo dài kia là em tôi.The girl in the ao dai over there is my sister.
