How it works
To use a verb or adjective as a noun subject/object, formal Vietnamese adds việc or sự. Việc + verb for concrete activities: Việc học tiếng Việt cần kiên nhẫn 'Learning Vietnamese takes patience'. Sự + verb/adjective for abstract qualities and events: sự giúp đỡ 'help', sự thật 'truth', sự phát triển 'development'. In speech they are often dropped: Học tiếng Việt khó. Mistake: sự with everyday actions (sự ăn ✗) or overusing them in casual talk.
