How it works
Và joins words and clauses: 'and': tôi và bạn tôi, Tôi ăn cơm và uống trà. Với means 'with (together)' and also links nouns casually: Tôi đi với chị Lan. Cùng 'together with' is a little more formal; cùng nhau = together. Cũng ≠ cùng: cũng is 'also'. Mistake: using và for 'with' after a verb (Tôi đi và anh ấy = 'I go, and him…'), or confusing cùng and cũng because they look alike.
