How it works
Nhưng 'but' starts the second clause: Tôi muốn đi nhưng tôi bận 'I want to go but I'm busy'. Nhưng mà is very common in speech. To soften a contrast with 'although', use tuy… nhưng (B1). A comma before nhưng is usual. Mistakes: putting nhưng at the end of the clause, or doubling contrast words as in Tuy nhưng. Nhưng mà can also open a reply: Nhưng mà em không biết! 'But I didn't know!'
