How it works
Là links two nouns: Tôi là sinh viên 'I am a student'. It is used ONLY before a noun (job, name, nationality, identity). Before an adjective there is no là: Tôi mệt, not Tôi là mệt. Vietnamese has no articles, so 'a student' is just sinh viên. Là never changes: same for I, you, they, past or present. Mistake: translating every 'to be' as là — 'I am tired', 'it is hot', 'she is at home' do not use là.
