How it works
Possession is noun + của + owner: sách của tôi 'my book', nhà của chị ấy 'her house' — the reverse of English. With family members and close things, của is usually dropped: mẹ tôi 'my mother', bạn tôi 'my friend'. Keep của when you want to stress the owner or answer 'whose?': Cái này của ai? — Của tôi. Mistake: putting the owner first (tôi sách) as in English 'my book'.
