Third person: anh ấy, cô ấy, nó

VietnameseA1 — BeginnerPronouns and kinship terms
Patternkinship word + ấy = he / she · nó = it / he (child)

How it works

To say 'he/she', add ấy to the kinship term you would use for that person: anh ấy (he, a young man), chị ấy, cô ấy (she), ông ấy (he, an old man), bạn ấy (he/she, a peer). Nó means 'it' for animals and things, and 'he/she' for a child or someone much younger; for an adult it is rude. Mistake: using nó for any 'he/she' like English 'it'. Southern speech uses ảnh, chỉ, ổng, bả instead of anh ấy, chị ấy, ông ấy, bà ấy.

Examples

Cô ấy không ở nhà.She is not at home.
