Adjectives as predicates: Tôi mệt, rất đẹp

VietnameseA1 — BeginnerSaying what something is
PatternS + (rất) + Adj

How it works

Adjectives work like verbs: put them straight after the subject, with no 'to be'. Phở ngon 'Pho is tasty'. 'Very' is rất BEFORE the adjective: rất ngon. Lắm and quá AFTER the adjective also mean 'very/so': ngon lắm, ngon quá. Mistakes: adding là (Phở là ngon), or putting rất after (ngon rất). Note: when an adjective describes a noun inside a phrase, it follows the noun: cô gái đẹp 'a pretty girl'.

Examples

Hôm nay trời nóng.It is hot today.
Phở này rất ngon. This pho is very tasty.
Cô ấy là một cô gái thông minh. She is a smart girl.
