Classifiers cái, con, chiếc: counting things

VietnameseA1 — BeginnerNumbers, classifiers and this/that
Patternnumber + classifier + N

How it works

When counting or pointing, put a classifier between the number and the noun: hai con mèo 'two cats', ba cái bàn 'three tables'. Con is for animals (and some moving things: con dao, con đường); cái is the general one for objects; chiếc for vehicles and one of a pair (chiếc xe, chiếc giày); quyển/cuốn for books; người for people. Mistake: dropping the classifier (hai mèo) or using con for objects. Một cái = 'one'.

Examples

Tôi có hai con chó.I have two dogs.
Cho tôi một cái bánh mì.Give me a baguette sandwich.
Anh ấy mua một chiếc xe máy.He bought a motorbike.
