How it works
Mấy asks 'how many' when you expect a small number (under ~10) or for set items: mấy giờ 'what time', mấy tuổi 'how old (child)', mấy người. Bao nhiêu is for any amount, big numbers and prices: bao nhiêu tiền 'how much money', bao nhiêu tuổi (adults). Both go before the noun, but bao nhiêu can also stand at the end: Cái này bao nhiêu? Mistake: Mấy tiền? (wrong — say Bao nhiêu tiền?) or asking an adult Mấy tuổi (sounds like talking to a child).
