How it works
To negate a verb or adjective, put không right before it: Tôi không ăn thịt 'I don't eat meat'. There is no 'do/does' helper and nothing changes for person or tense. Mistakes: putting không at the end (Tôi ăn thịt không — that turns it into a question) or using không phải before a verb (Tôi không phải ăn thịt means 'I don't have to eat meat'). Colloquial chẳng/chả also mean 'not' (later level).
