How it works
Vậy (South/general) and thế (North) mean 'so / like that': làm thế 'do it like that', Thế à? / Vậy hả? 'Really?' At the start, vậy thì / thế thì = 'in that case': Vậy thì mình đi thôi. At the end of a wh-question they soften: Anh làm gì thế? 'What are you doing?' Như vậy / như thế = 'like this, thus'. Mistake: mixing thế and vậy styles randomly — pick one register; also vì vậy (therefore) is formal.
