How it works
Chăng at the end (literary/formal, also used in speech) voices a guess or wonder: 'perhaps…?': Anh ấy quên rồi chăng? 'Could he have forgotten?' Phải chăng… opens a reflective question in writing: Phải chăng hạnh phúc là… 'Could it be that happiness is…?' Hay sao? questions with surprise or doubt: Anh không biết hay sao? 'Don't you know, or what?' Mistake: using chăng for ordinary information questions.
