How it works
Repeating an adjective, often with a tone change, softens it to 'somewhat, -ish': đỏ → đo đỏ 'reddish', xanh → xanh xanh 'bluish', nhỏ → nho nhỏ 'smallish', trắng → trăng trắng. Many words are fixed rhyming or alliterative pairs that sound vivid or general: sạch sẽ 'nice and clean', nhanh nhẹn 'nimble', vui vẻ 'cheerful', đẹp đẽ. Learners can't invent these freely — learn them as words. Mistake: reduplicating to mean 'very' (đỏ đỏ is not 'very red').
