How it works
Lại AFTER a verb means 'again (redo)' or 'back': làm lại 'redo', nói lại 'say again', gọi lại 'call back', quay lại 'come back'. Lại BEFORE a verb means 'again (once more, often annoyed)': Anh ấy lại đến muộn 'He's late again'. Nữa 'more/again' at the end: Nói lại một lần nữa 'Say it once more'. Mistake: confusing the two positions — Em lại làm means 'you're doing it AGAIN' (complaint), Em làm lại means 'redo it'.
