How it works
Đã before a verb marks a past or completed action: Tôi đã ăn sáng 'I had breakfast'. It is often dropped when a time word already shows the past: Hôm qua tôi đi chợ. It is often combined with rồi at the end: Tôi đã ăn rồi 'I've already eaten'. Negative past is usually không (+ time word) or chưa 'not yet' — NOT không đã. Mistake: adding đã to every past sentence; it sounds heavy in casual speech.
