Consonant pairs that merge in the north
In northern speech TR and CH sound identical, and D, GI and R all sound like a Z. In central and southern speech they stay distinct.
Neither dialect is wrong. But pick ONE and stay with it — mixing them within a sentence sounds strange to everyone.
- trà tea — chà to rub (same in the north)
- trên above — chên (not a word, for contrast)
- da skin — gia family — ra to go out (all Z in the north)
- rất very — in the south a real rolled R
- trời sky — the most common TR word
