The six tones — the foundation of everything
Northern Vietnamese has six tones. They are not decoration: the same syllable with a different tone is a completely different word.
NGANG is flat and level. HUYEN falls smoothly. SAC rises sharply. HOI dips down then rises. NGA breaks in the middle with a catch. NANG drops abruptly and stops short.
Record yourself and compare with the model audio. Tones are learned by ear, not by rule.
